  • What ages do your writing classes serve?

We offer creative writing classes for elementary, middle, and high school students, with leveled paths for beginners, intermediate writers, and advanced teen authors.

  • Are WordPlay classes good for reluctant writers?

Yes. Our programs are designed to reduce pressure, build confidence, and make writing fun. Many reluctant writers thrive in our classes because of the supportive, conversational style and flexible assignments.

  • Are WordPlay classes good for enthusiastic or advanced writers?

Absolutely. We provide challenging prompts, publishable-level techniques, and expert feedback that helps passionate young writers grow their craft.

  • Who teaches the WordPlay courses?

Every class is taught by a background-checked, published author with extensive experience working with young writers. Students learn directly from real storytellers.

  • How do live writing classes work?

Live classes meet weekly on Zoom. Students participate in guided lessons, discussions, writing time, and optional sharing. All cameras and microphones remain on to create an interactive workshop environment.

  • Do you offer asynchronous or self-paced courses?

Yes. WordPlay offers asynchronous writing courses, guided workbooks, downloadable units, and ready-to-use creative writing curriculum for homeschoolers, classrooms, and independent learners.

  • Do students need to be strong writers to join?

It depends on the class! Generally, no—classes are built such that they’re friendly to all skill levels. We focus on output, not perfection—students learn by writing frequently in a supportive space.
That said, some classes (like our Teen Anthology class or our 8 Week Novel Class) tend to be aimed at enthusiastic and experienced writers. WordPlay is built for all skill levels.

  • Is there homework?

Most classes use short weekly assignments or in-class writing time. Some advanced courses include longer projects like short stories, final pieces, or anthology submissions.

  • Do you offer book clubs as well as writing classes?

Yes. WordPlay hosts book-club-style discussion classes and novel studies with creative prompts, literary analysis, and reader-driven conversation.

  • How are your courses different from traditional ELA programs?

WordPlay focuses on creativity, voice, and storytelling rather than worksheets or test prep. Our goal is to help students love writing—not treat it like a chore.

  • Do you follow common core or state standards?

While our classes support key literacy skills (reading comprehension, analysis, narrative writing, etc.), they are not built around a specific standardized curriculum. Families and teachers often use WordPlay as a supplement.

  • Do you offer homeschool-friendly curriculum?

Yes. WordPlay provides full creative writing units, novel studies, and literacy-rich activities used by homeschoolers worldwide. Many families build full semesters around our resources.

  • Can students publish their work through WordPlay?

Yes! We run a teen anthology class where students submit stories, retain full copyright, and participate in a real publication experience. Proceeds are donated to charity.

  • What technology do students need?

A stable internet connection, a device with camera and microphone, and a place to write. No fancy equipment or software required.

  • What if my child is shy about sharing?

Sharing is always optional. Students can participate at their comfort level while still getting the benefit of guided instruction.

  • Do you offer private lessons or tutoring?

We primarily offer group classes, but limited 1:1 coaching may be available depending on schedule.

  • How do I choose the right writing class for my child?

Consider age, writing experience, and interest. Many families start with a beginner or theme-based class, then move into more advanced pathways as their child’s confidence grows.

  • What’s the refund policy?

Refunds vary by class type and platform. Please see the registration page for platform-specific refund policies.

  • Can I use ESA or Charter School funds for classes?

Absolutely! We’re approved ESA vendors in multiple states, and are familiar with the Charter School process. Find out more here!
