Not-So-Scary Spooky Stories
$21 per session
In this weekly class, learners will pick up a new creative writing skill, strategy, or focus each week, then write their own short story that puts it to work — all with a spooky twist! Think haunted houses that aren't quite what they seem, misunderstood monsters, mysterious noises in the attic, friendly ghosts, and creaky doors that open on their own. We keep things spooky and fun, never nightmare-fuel, so writers get all the delicious chills without the bad dreams.
Every week stands on its own, so students can join any week they like and drop in whenever works for your family. There's no need to attend in order, and no one falls behind by missing a week.
A "not-so-scary" promise: this class is built for the 8–11 crowd. We lean into the fun kind of spooky — mystery, suspense, silliness, and surprise — and steer clear of gore, graphic violence, and genuinely frightening content. The goal is goosebumps and giggles, not scares that stick around after bedtime.
Here's what a typical week looks like:
🎃 A quick, friendly warm-up to get imaginations going
🎃 A mini-lesson on one storytelling skill (building suspense, writing a twist ending, describing a spooky setting, creating a creature, and more)
🎃 Independent writing time, where students draft their own spooky story using the week's skill
🎃 An optional chance to share aloud and get warm, encouraging feedback
At the end of each class, students are invited — though never required — to share their writing with the group. The teacher will offer quick, thoughtful feedback and talk through the work with the student. Students who'd rather send their story to the teacher will receive written feedback within a few days of class.
