Write a Book
A self-paced course to help teens reach their novel-writing goals!
For teens to brainstorm, develop, and write their own book.
Using the myriad of tips and tricks I've learned from over a decade of writing professionally, speaking in schools, and teaching camps/classes, I encourage students to treat writing as play-- but to also hold themselves accountable and respect their talent!
Students are encouraged to explore and develop their own voices, and can write in any genre or style they choose. Each week, students will have optional homework where they submit a sample of their story (this sample is connected to that week's lesson-- so, the week we cover dialogue, they're asked to submit a dialogue-heavy sample) and receive feedback from the teacher. Students are welcome to move through the class at their own pace-- theyβll have lifetime access to the lessons themselves, and eight weeks from their start date to submit the homework for feedback!
This is an encouraging, supportive class, and is built such that it's the class I wish I'd had as a teenage writer.

Story Structure
In this lesson we'll go over the fundamentals of story structure-- from the basics you may have heard before, to the more components of a story that might be new to you. We'll also discuss "free writing" and outlining, as well as ways to keep yourself from starting a story and fizzling out!

Story Structure Homework
Homework is totally optional-- but it's a great way to get feedback on your writing!

Creating Compelling Characters
People might like a story for the plot, but they love a story for the characters. In this lesson we'll talk about creating engaging characters that feel like real people, not cardboard cutouts.

I'm the author of sixteen books for tweens and teens, including the ππͺπ± ππ’π³π΅ππ¦π΅π΅'π΄ ππΆπͺπ₯π¦ π΅π° ππ’π¨πͺπ€π’π ππ³π¦π’π΅πΆπ³π¦π΄ series (Scholastic), the ππππͺπ¦, ππ―π¨πͺπ―π¦π¦π³ series (Bloomsbury), and the ππ°πΆπ£ππ¦π€π³π°π΄π΄ series (Bloomsbury). My books are published in twenty-three languages around the world, and have won multiple state and national awards. I have taught creative writing classes across the country at schools, libraries, colleges, and camps, and have taught over 10,000 students online! I also have a bachelor's in English from the University of Georgia.
My classes are fun, informative, and engaging, and I genuinely love helping students uncover or hone their writing talents. Students are encouraged to ask questions during, before, or after class, and I do my best to relate the material to their likes, dislikes, and interests so they connect better with the coursework.
