Each week, students will stretch their creativity and select key elements to write a story! Will they choose an abandoned castle or a busy space station? A time-traveling detective or a mischievous talking dog? The choice is theirs—and those choices shape the direction of their stories.
This class is a great middle ground between our "Three Minute Challenge" class or "Weekly Short Story: Age 10 and Under" class and our more advanced teen "Weekly Short Story" classes-- writing is low-stress, approachable, and gamified, but the teacher will also cover important creative writing elements like story structure, literary devices, and character development.
Each class starts with a quick round of “This or That,” where students choose between two options in categories like setting, character, conflict, and bonus item. These choices become the foundation for the short story they’ll write that day!
The teacher will guide students through a short discussion (about 20 minutes), offering examples, brainstorming strategies, and writing tips to spark their imaginations. Then, it’s writing time! Students will have 20-25 minutes to develop their own short stories or scenes based on their selected elements.
Students can write by hand or type their stories—whatever feels right for them—and all genres are welcome! At the end of class, those who want to share can read their stories aloud to the group (but sharing is always optional).
Here are some sample combinations from our “This or That” choices to inspire your imagination:
Task: Write a story featuring a pirate captain... and a missing lunchbox.
Did someone steal the captain’s lunchbox? Or is the lunchbox itself hiding a dangerous secret? Is the lunchbox the reason for a high-seas adventure—or just the thing that causes the captain to lose their temper?
Task: Write a story set in a haunted library… with a lost alien as the protagonist.
What happens when a ghost and an alien meet among dusty old books? Does the alien help the ghost finish its unfinished business—or do they discover a hidden portal tucked between two ancient bookshelves?
Task: Write a story featuring a knight in shining armor… who accidentally swapped bodies with a cat.
How does the knight deal with paws, fur, and a sudden obsession with chasing mice? And what does the cat do with its new sword-wielding abilities?
No two weeks are ever the same—and that’s the fun! Each class sparks new ideas and gives students the tools to turn their imaginations into full-fledged stories.
